Overview

Octisalate is an organic compound used as a chemical sunscreen agent in over-the-counter sunscreens and cosmetic products. It is the ester of salicylic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. The primary mechanism of action involves the absorption of UVB radiation (wavelengths 295–315 nm), protecting skin from sunburn and other harmful effects of ultraviolet light exposure[1][3][6][8]. Octisalate forms a shielding film on the skin that absorbs UVB rays and converts them into less damaging energy[6]. It does not protect against UVA radiation and is typically combined with other sunscreen agents to provide broad-spectrum protection[1][3]. Octisalate also acts as an emollient due to its fatty alcohol component. The FDA has approved its use in sunscreens at concentrations up to 5%[4][5][6]. While generally considered safe with a good safety profile, there are some concerns about systemic absorption and potential endocrine disruption at high exposure levels[7][8]. Developed by Symrise.
