Octocrylene is an organic compound widely used as a chemical UV filter in sunscreens and various cosmetic products. It is an ester formed by the condensation of 2‑ethylhexyl cyanoacetate with benzophenone, resulting in a viscous, colorless to light yellow oily liquid. Octocrylene absorbs ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (290–320 nm) and some short-wave UVA rays (up to ~350 nm), protecting skin from direct DNA damage caused by sun exposure. Its emollient properties also provide moisturizing effects and improve water resistance in formulations[1][5][8]. Octocrylene works by absorbing UV energy and converting it into heat, which is then released from the skin[8]. It is approved for use at concentrations up to 10% in both the US and EU[1]. While generally considered safe at these levels, concerns have been raised about its potential for skin penetration, systemic absorption, allergic reactions, hormone disruption potential at higher concentrations or chronic exposure, environmental impact on marine life (notably coral), and possible contamination with benzophenone over time due to degradation[1][5][9].
