Overview

1,5-Dimethylhexylamine, commonly known as octodrine or DMHA, is a synthetic small-molecule sympathomimetic stimulant. Originally developed as a nasal decongestant and local anesthetic, it acts primarily as a central nervous system stimulant by modulating adrenergic pathways. While it has historical medical use as a vasoconstrictor and an intermediate in the synthesis of antispasmodics like octamylamine, it is currently most prevalent as an ingredient in pre-workout and weight-loss dietary supplements. It is not FDA-approved for these uses and is listed as a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Pharmacologically, it has also demonstrated inhibitory effects on leucine aminotransferase and anti-inflammatory properties through the suppression of cytokine and chemokine production.
