Octreotate is a synthetic peptide and a somatostatin analog closely related to octreotide. It is most commonly encountered as the chelated form DOTA-octreotate (DOTA-TATE), which is used in radiopharmaceuticals for imaging and targeted therapy of neuroendocrine tumors. Octreotate binds with high affinity to somatostatin receptor subtype 2 (SSTR2), inhibiting the release of several hormones and growth factors. When labeled with radionuclides such as lutetium-177 or gallium-68, it enables both diagnostic imaging (PET/CT) and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) for neuroendocrine tumors by delivering targeted radiation to tumor cells expressing SSTR2.
