Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Octreotide depot is a long-acting, prolonged-release formulation of octreotide acetate, a synthetic cyclic octapeptide analogue of the natural hormone somatostatin. Developed by Pharm-Sintez and manufactured by Empresa DECO, it acts as a potent agonist of somatostatin receptors (SSTRs), specifically SSTR2, SSTR3, and SSTR5. By mimicking the inhibitory effects of somatostatin, it suppresses the secretion of growth hormone (GH) and various gastrointestinal and pancreatic peptides, including insulin, glucagon, gastrin, and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). The depot formulation, administered via intramuscular injection, allows for sustained therapeutic levels, making it suitable for the long-term management of acromegaly and symptoms associated with functional neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) such as carcinoid syndrome, VIPomas, and gastrinomas. It is also indicated for the treatment of hormone-resistant prostate cancer and the prevention of complications following pancreatic surgery.
