Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Octreotide hydrochloride (specifically the CAM2029 formulation) is a long-acting subcutaneous depot of the somatostatin analog octreotide, developed by Camurus using its proprietary FluidCrystal injection depot technology. Designed for the treatment of acromegaly, neuroendocrine tumors, and polycystic liver disease, the FluidCrystal technology allows for a small-volume injection that transforms into a liquid crystalline gel upon contact with tissue fluids, providing sustained release of the drug over several weeks. Octreotide acts as a potent agonist at somatostatin receptors, primarily SSTR2 and SSTR5, which inhibits the secretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), as well as various gastroenteropancreatic hormones. This formulation aims to provide improved convenience and efficacy compared to existing monthly somatostatin analog injections.
