Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The octreotide implant is a 6-month, subcutaneous hydrogel-based delivery system developed by Endo Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of acromegaly. Utilizing HYDRON polymer technology, the implant provides sustained release of octreotide, a synthetic cyclic peptide and somatostatin analog. Octreotide acts as an agonist at somatostatin receptors, particularly SSTR2 and SSTR5, which leads to the inhibition of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) secretion. The implant was designed to provide a more convenient alternative to monthly long-acting release (LAR) injections. While the product reached Phase III clinical trials, development was discontinued around 2011.
