Overview

A novel ocular (retinal) fluorescent tracer designed to bind specifically to aggregates of alpha-synuclein in the retina. Upon binding, the tracer emits a fluorescent signal detectable by standard ophthalmic imaging devices. This approach enables non-invasive, in vivo detection of pathological alpha-synuclein accumulation—a hallmark of Parkinson’s disease and related synucleinopathies—potentially allowing earlier diagnosis and monitoring of disease progression. The mechanism relies on selective binding to aggregated (not monomeric) forms of alpha-synuclein within retinal neurons, with subsequent fluorescence emission upon excitation. The drug is being developed as a diagnostic tool rather than a therapeutic agent.
