Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ocupol DX is a combination ophthalmic and otic formulation containing the broad-spectrum antibiotics chloramphenicol and polymyxin B, along with the synthetic corticosteroid dexamethasone. Developed by Centaur Pharmaceuticals, it is approved for the treatment of bacterial eye and ear infections accompanied by inflammation, such as bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and otitis externa. Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, while polymyxin B disrupts the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria by binding to lipopolysaccharides. Dexamethasone acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist to suppress inflammatory mediators, thereby reducing redness, swelling, and irritation.
