Overview
OcuRing is a proprietary bioerodible sustained-release drug delivery platform developed by LayerBio (majority-owned by PainReform) for ophthalmic applications. The system consists of a bioerodible elastic ring that is mounted onto the haptic of an intraocular lens (IOL) and implanted into the anterior chamber (intracamerally) during cataract surgery. Once implanted, the ring continuously releases medication as it bio-erodes over several weeks, providing a 'dropless' alternative to traditional postoperative eye drop regimens. The lead product candidate, OcuRing-K, delivers ketorolac, a small molecule nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that acts as a non-selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). This mechanism reduces the production of prostaglandins, effectively managing postoperative pain and inflammation. The platform is also being explored for the delivery of corticosteroids, antibiotics, and glaucoma medications.
