Overview

Ocuris is an autologous regenerative medical product consisting of a sheet of cultivated epithelial cells derived from the patient's own oral mucosa. It is specifically developed for the treatment of bilateral limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), a condition where the eye loses the ability to regenerate its corneal surface, leading to pain, scarring, and blindness. Because the therapy uses the patient's own oral tissue, it eliminates the risk of immune rejection and the need for long-term immunosuppression, which are major hurdles in allogeneic transplants. The procedure, often referred to as Cultivated Oral Mucosal Epithelial Transplantation (COMET), involves harvesting a small biopsy of oral mucosa, culturing the cells on a substrate (such as a temperature-responsive polymer or amniotic membrane) to form a cohesive sheet, and then transplanting that sheet onto the prepared ocular surface to restore a functional, transparent epithelial layer.
