Overview

Odevixibat is a small molecule, orally administered, reversible and selective inhibitor of the ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT), also known as the ileal sodium/bile acid cotransporter. It is indicated for the treatment of pruritus (itching) in patients with progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC) aged 3 months and older, and for Alagille syndrome (ALGS) in patients aged 1 year and older. By inhibiting IBAT in the distal ileum, odevixibat reduces reabsorption of bile acids from the intestine, leading to decreased serum bile acid levels and increased fecal excretion. This mechanism alleviates pruritus associated with cholestatic liver diseases. Odevixibat was developed by Albireo Pharma and approved for use in both the United States and European Union in July 2021[5][3][6].
