Overview
OFD + PRF is a combination therapy consisting of Open Flap Debridement (OFD), a surgical periodontal procedure, and autologous Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF). OFD involves the reflection of a mucoperiosteal flap to allow access for thorough root debridement and cleaning of the periodontal pocket. PRF is a second-generation platelet concentrate prepared from the patient's own blood without the use of anticoagulants. It forms a fibrin matrix that acts as a scaffold and a reservoir for concentrated growth factors, including Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-β), and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). These factors are released over a period of 7 to 14 days, promoting angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and osteogenesis. This combination is primarily used in the treatment of intrabony defects in patients with chronic periodontitis to enhance clinical attachment levels and reduce probing depths.
