Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oftac is a preservative-free, topical ophthalmic nano-emulsion of tacrolimus (0.05%) developed by BNS Ophthalmics, a joint venture between BioNanoSim and RAFARM, for the treatment of active non-infectious anterior uveitis. Tacrolimus is a potent immunosuppressive calcineurin inhibitor that is highly insoluble and unstable in water. Oftac utilizes BioNanoSim's proprietary nano-emulsion technology, which encapsulates tacrolimus within the oil core of nano-scale oil droplets (mean size under 200 nm) dispersed in water. This formulation enhances the drug's stability, bioavailability, and corneal penetration, allowing for effective local delivery to ocular tissues with minimal systemic exposure. Oftac has completed a Phase 1/2a clinical trial in Israel and has received orphan drug designation from the US FDA for the treatment of uveitis.
