Overview
Oglemilast is a potent and selective small molecule inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), an enzyme involved in the breakdown of cyclic AMP (cAMP) in inflammatory and immune cells. By inhibiting PDE4, oglemilast increases intracellular cAMP levels, which leads to anti-inflammatory effects. Oglemilast was developed primarily for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. It has undergone Phase 2 clinical trials for both indications but did not demonstrate statistically significant efficacy over placebo in COPD studies. The drug was initially developed by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals.
