Overview

Oglufanide disodium is the disodium salt of a synthetic dipeptide composed of L-glutamic acid and L-tryptophan. It acts as an immunomodulator and angiogenesis inhibitor, with potential antiangiogenic and immunomodulating activities. Oglufanide inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which may suppress angiogenesis, a process critical for tumor growth. It also enhances the innate immune response, potentially reversing immune suppression caused by chronic infections such as hepatitis C virus or by cancer cells[1][3][4][5][6]. Originally developed in Russia (where it is registered under the brand name timogen) for severe infectious diseases, it has been studied in clinical trials for cancer (including ovarian cancer and Kaposi's sarcoma) and chronic hepatitis C viral infection[4][5]. The drug has been administered intranasally in some studies.
