Overview

OH-CATH30 is a 30-amino acid antimicrobial peptide derived from the cathelicidin of the king cobra (*Ophiophagus hannah*). Originally identified for its broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against drug-resistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (such as MRSA and multidrug-resistant *Acinetobacter baumannii*), it functions by disrupting bacterial cytoplasmic membranes. Recent research has highlighted its potent anti-inflammatory and anti-atrophic properties, specifically its role as a Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) inhibitor. By targeting the TLR4 signaling pathway, OH-CATH30 suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-α and downregulates protein degradation pathways, including the ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy-lysosome systems. This dual mechanism makes it a potential therapeutic candidate for treating both systemic drug-resistant infections and cachexia-associated muscle atrophy resulting from sepsis, cancer, or chemotherapy.
