Overview

Oil palm phenolics (OPP) is a water-soluble, bioactive-rich extract derived from the aqueous byproduct of palm oil milling, known as palm oil mill effluent (POME). Developed primarily by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), OPP is characterized by a high concentration of phenolic acids, notably caffeoylshikimic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and protocatechuic acid. It functions as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, demonstrating the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species, reduce inflammatory markers like TNF-α, and modulate lipid metabolism by downregulating cholesterol biosynthesis genes such as HMGCR. Clinical studies have investigated its potential in improving cardiovascular health, specifically targeting hyperlipidemia and hypertension through mechanisms involving endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activation and blood pressure regulation.
