Overview

Okadaic acid (also known as 9,10-Deepithio-9,10-didehydroacanthifolicin and halochondrine A) is a naturally occurring polyether toxin produced by marine dinoflagellates and isolated from marine sponges. It is a potent and selective inhibitor of serine/threonine protein phosphatases, specifically targeting protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) and protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A), with much higher affinity for PP2A. By inhibiting these enzymes, okadaic acid induces hyperphosphorylation of cellular proteins. This mechanism disrupts normal cell signaling pathways regulated by phosphorylation and has been widely used as a research tool to study these processes. Okadaic acid is also recognized as a tumor promoter and one of the primary causes of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning in humans[1][6][7][8].
