Olaflur is a small molecule, also known as amine fluoride 297, used primarily as a topical fluoride treatment to prevent dental caries (tooth decay), treat sensitive teeth, and aid in the refluoridation of damaged tooth enamel. It is commonly found as an ingredient in toothpastes and dental gels—most notably under the brand name "elmex gel"—and has been in use since 1966. Olaflur consists of an alkyl ammonium cation with a long lipophilic hydrocarbon chain (giving it surfactant properties) and a fluoride counterion. Its mechanism involves forming a film on the surface of teeth that facilitates incorporation of fluoride into enamel; this process converts hydroxylapatite (the primary mineral in enamel) into more robust fluorapatite, thereby strengthening the enamel and reducing susceptibility to caries. The depth of fluoridation is limited to only a few nanometers. Olaflur is often used alone or combined with other fluorides such as dectaflur for enhanced effect[1][2][3][4][6].
