Overview

Oldenlandia umbellata is a small annual herb native to India, prized in Ayurveda and Siddha systems of medicine for its therapeutic benefits. Traditionally, the roots and leaves are used to treat bleeding conditions, ulcers, toxic bites, cough, asthma, bronchitis, and fever. The plant is also notable for producing a red dye from its roots due to anthraquinone derivatives. Pharmacological studies indicate its extracts possess anti-tussive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and significant antibacterial properties. The active constituents include flavonoids, triterpenoids, alkaloids, tannins, and glycosides. Its expectorant, styptic, febrifuge, and antimicrobial effects arise from both direct phytochemical interactions and general bioactive properties, rather than action on specific molecular targets. Oldenlandia umbellata is used in the development of herbal medicines and is the subject of ongoing research aimed at validating its traditional applications and accelerating natural remedies against respiratory and infectious diseases[1][2][4][5][7][8].
