Overview
Olea europaea allergen extract is a form of allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT) used to treat respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma, triggered by sensitization to olive pollen. It functions by gradually desensitizing the patient's immune system through the administration of increasing doses of the allergen. This process aims to induce immunological tolerance, marked by a shift in the immune response that includes an increase in allergen-specific IgG4 antibodies and a decrease in IgE levels and skin reactivity. Clinical trial data describes a subcutaneous (SCIT) formulation adsorbed on aluminium hydroxide, developed by ALK-Abelló, which allows for a short, 6-week up-dosing schedule. [2, 3]
