Oleanolic acid-iron complex is a metal-organic complex consisting of the pentacyclic triterpene oleanolic acid and iron (Fe). It is being investigated for its potential therapeutic application in inflammatory diseases, specifically asthma. Preclinical studies in rat models of ovalbumin-induced asthma have shown that the complex significantly reduces airway inflammation, delayed-type hypersensitivity, and the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines including IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, and IL-17. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of key inflammatory mediators and pathways, such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), and toll-like receptor-2 (TLR-2). Additionally, the complex has been shown to lower serum IgE levels and nitric oxide production without exhibiting hepatotoxic or nephrotoxic effects.
