Overview

Oleanolic acid methyl ester (OAME) is a semi-synthetic pentacyclic triterpenoid derivative of oleanolic acid, a natural compound found in various plants. It is primarily investigated for its enhanced antitumor properties compared to its parent compound. In preclinical studies, OAME has demonstrated significant growth inhibition in pancreatic cancer cell lines, such as Aspc-1, with an IC50 lower than that of oleanolic acid. Its therapeutic potential is attributed to its ability to induce apoptosis, which is associated with the inhibition of the STAT3 signaling pathway and the subsequent downregulation of anti-apoptotic proteins like Bcl-XL. While it remains a subject of academic research, it serves as a lead candidate for the development of targeted therapies for pancreatic and other cancers.
