Olfactory mucosa-derived mesenchymal stem cells (OM-MSCs) are a population of multipotent stromal/stem cells isolated from the lamina propria of the nasal olfactory mucosa. These cells share core characteristics with other tissue-derived MSCs such as self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation potential but are distinguished by their neurogenic affinity and robust immunomodulatory properties. OM-MSCs express typical MSC markers (CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90, CD105) and lack hematopoietic markers (CD34, CD45). They have demonstrated efficacy in preclinical models for promoting neural regeneration and functional recovery after injury to the nervous system—including spinal cord trauma and peripheral nerve injury—as well as in models of immune-mediated diseases. Mechanistically, OM-MSCs exert effects through secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines and trophic factors that modulate immune responses and support tissue repair. Their accessibility via minimally invasive nasal biopsy makes them attractive for autologous cell therapy applications[2][3][4][5][6].
