Overview

Oligandrin is an ent-pimarane type diterpenoid isolated from Croton oligatrus. It is being investigated for its immune-modulatory and antioxidant properties, which contribute to its potential as a natural anticancer agent. Studies have shown that oligandrin can increase peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) numbers, reduce tumor incidence and burden, and exert a significant antioxidant effect by increasing levels of glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Furthermore, it modulates cytokine levels, decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-12 (IL-12), Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α), and Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), while increasing the anti-inflammatory cytokine Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). These actions suggest its utility in treating cancers, particularly breast cancer, by addressing immune system dysfunction and oxidative stress.
