Overview

Raftilose is a commercial brand of oligofructose, a prebiotic dietary fiber composed of short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS). It is typically extracted from chicory roots through partial enzymatic hydrolysis of inulin. As a prebiotic, Raftilose is not digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract but is fermented by beneficial bacteria in the colon, such as *Bifidobacterium* and *Lactobacillus* species. This fermentation leads to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including acetate, propionate, and butyrate, which play crucial roles in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity and modulating immune responses. It is widely used as a functional food ingredient and has been investigated in clinical trials for its potential to improve gut health in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
