Overview

Oligofructose-enriched inulin is a mixture of non-digestible carbohydrates composed primarily of fermentable plant fructans—specifically oligosaccharides and inulin—with potential prebiotic activity. It is used to improve digestive health and bone health and is being studied for the prevention of colon cancer[1][4]. As a prebiotic fiber, it resists digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the colon intact, where it selectively stimulates the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacterium. This fermentation process produces short-chain fatty acids that nourish colon cells and may confer additional metabolic benefits[3][7]. Clinical studies have shown that oligofructose-enriched inulin can modulate inflammatory markers (e.g., interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α), improve glycemic control (lower fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c), increase satiety via appetite-regulating hormones (GLP-1, PYY), reduce LDL cholesterol levels, support weight management by increasing fullness/reducing food intake after exercise or during weight loss interventions, and potentially benefit patients with type 2 diabetes or obesity[6][8][7]. Common side effects include flatulence, bloating, abdominal discomfort, loose stools or diarrhea—especially at higher doses (>10g/day)[3][8].
