Overview

OligoG is a low molecular weight alginate oligosaccharide, specifically a G-block guluronate oligomer, derived from the stipes of the brown seaweed *Laminaria hyperborea*. Developed by AlgiPharma AS, it is primarily investigated for the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) and other obstructive airway diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The drug functions through a dual mechanism: it acts as a mucolytic by chelating calcium ions that cross-link mucin polymers, thereby reducing mucus viscosity and improving clearance, and it serves as an anti-biofilm agent. By disrupting the structural integrity of bacterial biofilms, particularly those of *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*, OligoG increases the susceptibility of pathogens to both the host immune system and exogenous antibiotics. It is typically administered via inhalation as a dry powder or nebulized solution.
