Overview

Oligomeric lactic acid (OMLA) is an investigational sustained-release vaginal pessary developed by Laccure AB for the treatment and prevention of bacterial vaginosis (BV). The drug is a pharmaceutical composition comprising oligomers of lactic acid, ranging from dimers to dodecamers. It functions by providing a controlled, prolonged release of lactic acid, which locally lowers the vaginal pH to a range of 3.8 to 5.0. This acidification restores the natural vaginal environment, making it hostile to pathogenic bacteria responsible for BV while supporting the growth of beneficial lactobacilli. Unlike conventional lactic acid treatments that require daily dosing, OMLA's sustained-release profile allows for once- or twice-weekly administration.
