Oligon is an antimicrobial material technology primarily utilized in the construction of medical devices, such as central venous catheters, to prevent healthcare-associated infections. Developed by Edwards Lifesciences (originally by Baxter Healthcare), the technology involves the impregnation of silver, carbon, and platinum particles throughout the polymer matrix of the device. The mechanism of action relies on the controlled release of silver ions (Ag+), which exert broad-spectrum bactericidal and fungicidal effects by disrupting microbial cell membranes, inhibiting essential metabolic enzymes, and binding to nucleic acids to prevent replication. The inclusion of platinum and carbon creates a galvanic cell effect that enhances the release and efficacy of the silver ions. It is specifically indicated for reducing the incidence of catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) in patients requiring long-term vascular access.
