Oligosaccharide-sialic acid compound is a prebiotic dietary supplement being investigated for its effects on maternal and infant health. A clinical trial is evaluating its use during pregnancy to modulate the gut microbiome, with primary outcomes focused on its effect on the maternal-offspring gut microbiota and the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The compound consists of oligosaccharides and sialic acid, which are naturally occurring carbohydrates. Sialylated oligosaccharides are important components of human milk and are believed to play a role in promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, modulating the immune system, and supporting infant development. The investigation is sponsored by Peking University First Hospital and the Beijing Natural Science Foundation - Sanyuan Joint Research Fund.
