Oliveria decumbens is an aromatic medicinal plant belonging to the Apiaceae family, native to Iran and neighboring regions. Traditionally, it has been used in Persian medicine for treating gastrointestinal disorders (such as indigestion, diarrhea, abdominal pain), fever, and infections. The primary bioactive components of its essential oil are thymol and carvacrol, along with γ-terpinene, myristicin, and ρ-cymene. Scientific studies have demonstrated that extracts—especially the essential oil—exhibit significant antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anticancer (notably against breast cancer cell lines), antiprotozoal, antiviral, hepatoprotective, and immunostimulant activities. The mechanisms underlying these effects are attributed mainly to the high concentrations of thymol and carvacrol acting on microbial cell membranes or modulating oxidative stress pathways. While promising in vitro and some in vivo data support traditional uses for infections and gastrointestinal ailments as well as potential anticancer applications via apoptosis induction in cancer cells (e.g., MCF-7 breast cancer line), further preclinical research is needed before pharmaceutical development[1][2][3][4][7].
