Overview
Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6 years and older. It works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1) in vascular smooth muscle, preventing vasoconstriction and reducing blood pressure. This action leads to relaxation of blood vessels, decreased aldosterone levels, reduced cardiac activity, and increased sodium excretion. Olmesartan is also used off-label for conditions such as type 2 diabetes-associated nephropathy, heart failure, and post-myocardial infarction in patients intolerant to ACE inhibitors[1][2][4]. Lowering blood pressure with olmesartan helps reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks, kidney problems, and other cardiovascular events[5]. Developers: Daiichi Sankyo
