Overview

Olopatadine is a selective histamine H1 antagonist and mast cell stabilizer used primarily to treat allergic conjunctivitis (itchy eyes due to allergies) and allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking the effects of histamine—a key mediator in allergic reactions—at the H1 receptor and by stabilizing mast cells to prevent the release of inflammatory mediators such as tryptase and prostaglandin D2. Olopatadine is available as ophthalmic solutions for eye symptoms (e.g., itching or redness from pollen or animal dander) and as a nasal spray for seasonal allergic rhinitis. The drug was first approved in 1996 (ophthalmic) in the US and EU. Compared with corticosteroid eye drops, olopatadine offers relief with fewer side effects related to intraocular pressure or infection risk[1][3][7].
