Olopatadine is a dual-action pharmacological agent that functions as a selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist and a mast cell stabilizer. It is widely used for the symptomatic treatment of allergic conjunctivitis and allergic rhinitis. By competitively binding to H1 receptors, olopatadine prevents the inflammatory actions of histamine on target tissues. Additionally, it stabilizes mast cells, inhibiting the degranulation and subsequent release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, tryptase, and prostaglandin D2. Developed by Alcon, olopatadine is available in several formulations, including ophthalmic solutions at concentrations of 0.1% (Patanol), 0.2% (Pataday), and 0.7% (Pazeo), as well as a 0.6% nasal spray (Patanase). The development code AL-53817 was specifically associated with the 0.2% ophthalmic and 0.6% nasal spray formulations during their clinical evaluation.
