olpadronate monosodium

IG-8801 (olpadronate monosodium) is a non-traditional bisphosphonate small molecule developed by the Argentine pharmaceutical company Gador S.A. Unlike classical bisphosphonates, IG-8801 does not inhibit osteoclast viability or function, nor does it inhibit the mevalonate pathway or bone resorption. Instead, it retains a high affinity for mineralized bone (hydroxyapatite) and has been shown to prevent the apoptosis of osteoblasts and osteocytes in vitro. The drug has been investigated in Phase 2 clinical trials as an intravenous treatment for chronic low back pain associated with degenerative lumbar spine disease. Historically, it has also been studied for the treatment of Paget's disease of bone and osteoporosis.
