Drug intelligence / Profile preview
OM-85 is an oral standardized bacterial lysate composed of alkaline-lysed fractions from 21 strains of 8 common respiratory pathogens: *Haemophilus influenzae*, *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, *Klebsiella ozaenae*, *Staphylococcus aureus*, *Streptococcus pyogenes*, *Streptococcus viridans*, and *Moraxella catarrhalis*. It functions as an immunomodulator by stimulating the mucosal immune system through the activation of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), particularly TLR2 and TLR4. This stimulation enhances innate immune defenses, such as macrophage and natural killer cell activity, and modulates adaptive immune responses by influencing T-cell maturation and cytokine production. Developed by OM Pharma and marketed under the brand name Broncho-Vaxom, it is indicated for the prevention of recurrent respiratory tract infections (RTIs) and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis. Campus Bio-Medico University has been involved in Phase 4 clinical research evaluating its efficacy in preventing lower respiratory tract infections in elderly nursing home residents.
