Overview
OM-85 (marketed as Vaxoral or Broncho-Vaxom) is an oral bacterial lysate immunomodulator composed of 21 different strains from 8 common respiratory pathogen species, including *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, *Haemophilus influenzae*, and *Staphylococcus aureus*. It acts as an immunostimulant by enhancing the host's innate and adaptive immune responses against respiratory pathogens through the activation of Toll-like receptors (TLR2 and TLR4) on dendritic cells and macrophages. This activation leads to increased mucosal immunity and a reduction in the frequency and severity of acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs). The drug has been evaluated in clinical trials, including a Phase 4 study at Dr. Sami Ulus Children's Hospital, for its potential to reduce adenoid tissue size in children with adenoid hypertrophy, thereby potentially preventing surgical complications.
