OM-89

OM-89 (UroVaxom) is a bacterial extract prepared from 18 uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains used for the prevention and treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections. It works as an immunomodulator by activating immune cells, likely through Toll-like receptors (particularly TLR-4 and marginally TLR-2). After oral administration, OM-89 demonstrates several immunological effects: - Activates leukocytes in blood and liver cells - Increases production of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in peritoneal cells - Enhances serum immunoglobulin G responses against several E. coli strains - Shows adjuvant properties when used with other antigens - Stimulates production of TNF-α and interleukin-6 in human monocyte-derived dendritic cells The vaccine is administered as one 6 mg capsule daily for 90 days, sometimes followed by a "booster" regimen of administration for the first 10 days of months 7, 8, and 9. Clinical studies have shown it reduces the frequency of UTI recurrence.
