OM3-MAG is a dietary supplement formulation of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (most commonly including eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid, DHA) in a monoacylglycerol (MAG) structure rather than the more conventional triacylglycerol (TAG) or ethyl ester (EE) forms. The MAG form is considered "pre-digested," allowing for enhanced bioavailability and absorption of EPA and DHA, particularly under conditions of impaired fat digestion or low dietary fat intake. Clinical trials indicate that OM3-MAG results in significantly higher plasma concentrations of EPA and DHA compared to ethyl ester or triacylglycerol forms at equivalent doses, and thus may be especially beneficial for individuals with lipid malabsorption, obesity, cystic fibrosis, or those at high cardiovascular risk needing high-dose omega-3 therapy while on a low-fat diet. The OM3-MAG monoacylglycerol form does not rely on pancreatic lipase activity for absorption, making it more suitable for populations with reduced digestive enzyme function[1][2][3].
