Omacor (Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust)

Omacor is a prescription-grade concentrate of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), primarily consisting of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ethyl esters. It is being evaluated in the Phase 3 PUFFIN trial, sponsored by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, for its efficacy in improving asthma control in patients with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (N-ERD), also known as non-steroidal exacerbated airways disease. The mechanism involves the modulation of the arachidonic acid pathway, specifically reducing the production of pro-inflammatory 4-series leukotrienes and increasing the production of less inflammatory 5-series leukotrienes and specialized pro-resolving mediators. By competing with arachidonic acid for metabolic enzymes, Omacor helps resolve chronic airway inflammation characteristic of N-ERD.
