Omberacetam, widely known by the brand name Noopept, is a synthetic dipeptide nootropic drug developed at the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology in Russia. Chemically related to the racetam family, it is reported to be significantly more potent than piracetam. Its primary mechanism of action involves the upregulation of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus, which facilitates neuroplasticity and neuroprotection. Additionally, omberacetam modulates glutamatergic neurotransmission by acting as a positive allosteric modulator of AMPA and NMDA receptors. It is clinically approved in Russia and other CIS countries for the treatment of cognitive impairment resulting from traumatic brain injury, cerebrovascular insufficiency, and asthenic disorders. In many other jurisdictions, including the United States, it is marketed as a dietary supplement rather than a pharmaceutical drug.
