Omega-3-acid ethyl esters + atorvastatin is a fixed-dose combination of two agents used to manage dyslipidemia, particularly in patients with elevated triglycerides and non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Omega-3-acid ethyl esters (marketed as Lovaza or Omtryg) are a mixture of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the form of ethyl esters, which lower triglyceride levels by reducing hepatic production of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). Atorvastatin (marketed as Lipitor) is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor ("statin") that lowers LDL cholesterol by inhibiting the rate-limiting step in cholesterol biosynthesis. The combination has been shown to produce significant improvements in non-HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, VLDL-C, and HDL-C compared to statin monotherapy[1][4][6]. This combination is primarily indicated for adults with mixed dyslipidemia or severe hypertriglyceridemia who require additional lipid lowering beyond what can be achieved with statins alone.
