Omega-3 camelina is a genetically engineered variety of the oilseed crop *Camelina sativa* designed to produce high levels of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Developed primarily by Yield10 Bioscience in collaboration with Rothamsted Research, this transgenic plant incorporates a metabolic pathway derived from marine algae, allowing it to synthesize these essential fatty acids which are typically sourced from wild-caught fish. The primary goal is to provide a sustainable, land-based alternative to fish oil for use in aquaculture feed, human nutraceuticals, and potentially pharmaceutical applications. By shifting the production of EPA and DHA to a terrestrial crop, it addresses the supply constraints and environmental concerns associated with overfishing.
