Omega-3 fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are polyunsaturated fatty acids being evaluated as a nutritional supplement for the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Developed for clinical investigation by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, this intervention is currently in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT06125782) targeting children aged 2 to 18 years. The mechanism of action involves the incorporation of these fatty acids into neuronal cell membranes, which influences membrane fluidity, neurotransmission, and neuroinflammation. The supplement is administered orally as a 1 gm softgel capsule to assess its impact on neurobehavioral status and its correlation with systemic omega-3 levels.
