Overview

Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are being investigated by the Durham VA Medical Center as a nutritional intervention for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in veterans. These polyunsaturated fatty acids are thought to exert therapeutic effects through anti-inflammatory mechanisms and modulation of neurobiological pathways associated with stress, anxiety, and mood. The clinical research focuses on evaluating the efficacy of high-dose supplementation (titrated up to 975mg EPA and 675mg DHA three times daily) on PTSD symptoms, as measured by the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS), and cognitive function. This intervention represents an investigational use of a dietary supplement rather than a proprietary pharmaceutical product.
