Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) characterized by a double bond at the third carbon atom from the end of the carbon chain. In the context of the study by Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice, a specific supplementation regimen (1,650 mg/day) was evaluated for its potential to reduce liver volume (hepatomegaly) and fat content (hepatic steatosis) in morbidly obese patients prior to bariatric surgery. The rationale was that omega-3 PUFAs, such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), can modulate lipid metabolism, reduce inflammation, and inhibit lipogenesis. However, a multicenter randomized controlled trial (NCT03006016) concluded that a 4-week preoperative course did not significantly reduce liver volume or steatosis compared to placebo.
