Overview

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), derived from fish oil. In the context of Sjögren's syndrome, they have been investigated by Hawler Medical University for their anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism involves modulating prostaglandin metabolism, specifically shifting the balance toward the synthesis of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators. A Phase 2/3 clinical trial (NCT05005806) conducted at Rizgary Teaching Hospital in Erbil, Iraq, demonstrated that dietary omega-3 supplementation significantly improved dry eye and dry mouth symptoms and led to the normalization of salivary flow rates in patients with Sjögren's syndrome over a two-month treatment period.
