Omega-3 fatty acids are being evaluated by Mansoura University as a novel intracanal medicament for regenerative endodontic procedures, specifically for the revascularization of necrotic immature permanent teeth. In this application, omega-3 fatty acids (typically eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) are used to modulate the inflammatory environment within the root canal, promoting tissue healing and the regeneration of the pulp-dentin complex. The mechanism involves the resolution of inflammation through the production of specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) and the activation of the G protein-coupled receptor FFAR4 (GPR120). This approach aims to provide a more biocompatible and effective alternative to traditional techniques like induced bleeding or the use of triple antibiotic pastes, which can sometimes cause tooth discoloration or cytotoxicity.
